Situation Summary
In December 2019, a new (or novel) human coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) type emerged in China. At this time, it’s unclear how easily this virus is spreading between people. Patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath appearing anywhere from 2 to 14 days after exposure. Learn more about coronaviruses, how they present, and how they are tested by visiting Human Coronaviruses.
This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is providing updated information and guidance on this website, as well as, Facebook and Twitter, as it becomes available.
Current Situation in Alabama
For cases, deaths, and total tested by county of residence reported in real time, view the table below or visit our Data and Surveillance Dashboard. View mobile version.
Total Tested primarily represents tests that were satisfactorily performed by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Bureau of Clinical Laboratories (BCL), along with some data from commercial labs. Commercial labs are required, by law, to report positive tests to ADPH. Some commercial labs do not report negative specimens.
Reported Deaths and Died From Illness on the dashboard represent the number of individuals who have a positive lab result and are now deceased. To count a person who died from COVID-19 disease, the medical record of the deceased person has to be reviewed by a physician and Infectious Disease and Outbreak staff. Once review is complete, if the death is attributed to COVID-19, the individual will also appear in the Died From Illness on the dashboard. Reported Death totals are cumulative and will never decrease.
Testing Sites are facilities who have reported to ADPH that they are collecting specimens for COVID-19. This map does not reflect all collection sites in Alabama. Call the testing site for additional information before visiting. Or call the Alabama COVID-19 24/7 hotline at 1-888-264-2256 for testing sites and hours of operation near you. Interpreters are available. Note: There is no medical advice provided at this telephone number.
